WOOD WINDOW RESTORATION

Here at Cooper Historical Windows, we are dedicated to preserving history while being architecturally respectful. We preserve the original window frame, sash and trim whenever possible, reproducing new components only where required by matching the exact details of the original window. Our Liberty Restoration Glass coupled with our high performance IGUs will add superior energy efficiency to each window without sacrificing any of the original characteristics of 18th or 19th century glass.

WOOD WINDOW RESTORATION PROCESS

  • STEP 1:

    DOCUMENTATION & SASH REMOVAL

    The first step in restoring a historical wood window is to document the sash location, noting exact glass positions for reinstallation. Each sash is then carefully removed and transported to our facility.

  • STEP 2:

    PAINT & GLASS REMOVAL

    The numbered sash are placed into steam ovens to remove all paint and glazing. After the steaming process, the historical glass is carefully removed and cataloged.

  • STEP 3:

    SASH & FRAME RESTORATION

    Sash defects and cracks are repaired using epoxy technology. Muntins, stiles & rails that are beyond repair or missing are replicated to match the original profiles. Window frames are restored onsite where lead paint is mitigated, and any asbestos caulk is removed.

  • STEP 4:

    GLAZING & FINISHING

    The historical glass panes are reinstalled into their original location using putty glazing or wood stops. Any broken or damaged panes can be replaced with Liberty Restoration Glass. The window receives a final finish using the highest quality products once the glazing is complete.

  • STEP 5:

    HARDWARE RESTORATION

    All existing hardware is preserved and fully restored where possible. Any hardware missing or damaged beyond repair is replaced with accurate like and kind.

  • STEP 6:

    REINSTALLATION

    Each restored sash, outfitted with weather-stripping and all its original hardware, is delivered to the site and reinstalled into its restored window frame.
