Canal Dock Boathouse

As part of an overall plan to revitalize the waterfront, the City of New Haven commissioned the 2018 construction of the new Canal Dock Boathouse. The modern design called for the repurposing of elements salvaged from the ornate, 1911 Adee Boathouse building, originally used for the Yale University crew team. The original boathouse was demolished in 2007 to make way for the new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, however many of its unique features were spared.

Work conducted by The Cooper Group on the original façade included the complete restoration of the wood framed Gothic window with added historical looking tempered glass. Solid White Oak, linen-fold entry doors were fabricated in our shop as seen in the original architectural drawings. The original hand carved “Tympanum” above the doors was meticulously restored and reinstalled.

The Cooper Group also restored many other items throughout the building including restored truss, with purlins and rafters, the complete restoration of the large original fireplace surround, a restored/replicated pair of “Boat Bay Doors & Transom” and repurposed oak materials from the original frame we made into bench seats around the exterior of the building.

This restored gem currently sits behind a glass facade in the entry, visible for onlookers to enjoy from the street.
